Technology is advancing rapidly, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT are becoming more accessible to students. As educators, it’s our responsibility to teach students how to use these tools appropriately and ethically. In this post, I’ll share some best practices for promoting AI ethics use in the classroom.
Set Clear Expectations
The first step is setting explicit policies around AI use and AI ethics in your syllabus and assignments. Make it clear whether students can use AI tools to assist with drafts or final works, and what your expectations are for citing any outside sources. Some instructors prohibit AI altogether, while others allow it with proper attribution. Outline what is acceptable in your class.
Consider setting limits on how much AI assistance is permitted. For example, you may allow students to use AI to generate ideas or a rough draft outline, but require them to write the full draft and final paper themselves without further AI input. Set word limits on how much direct AI output can be used with attribution, if any.
Communicate your policies verbally as well. Discuss with students directly the appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI in your class, so they understand your standards and rationale.
Teach Critical Thinking
Stress that AI should be used as a tool, not a shortcut. The real learning comes when students actively think through assignments and material. Encourage them to:
- Use AI to generate ideas, not final passages. Have them outline key points or arguments first before asking an AI to expand on them.
- Thoroughly review and edit any AI output. Don’t let students hand in AI text verbatim. Make sure they read over responses carefully, double-checking the facts, reasoning, writing style, and flow.
- Double check facts, citations, and logical consistency. AI can make convincing-sounding but inaccurate or illogical arguments. Students need to verify any claims against reliable sources.
- Think critically about whether and how to integrate AI suggestions. The AI may propose points that don’t fit their topic or make sense for the assignment. Students should use their own judgment on what to include.
- Add their own original analysis and elaboration. Raw AI output should just be a starting point. With synthesis and reflection, students can transform it into deeper insights in their own words.
The goal is to enhance, not replace, their skills. AI should assist students in developing critical thinking abilities, not serve as a substitute.
Demonstrate AI Ethics and How to Use
Set an example by using AI transparently and ethically in your own work. When you demonstrate research or draft-writing using AI, verbalize your thought process:
- Explain what you are asking the AI to do. Articulate the purpose and scope of the prompt you provide.
- Evaluate the quality and relevance of the output. Note where the AI response is strong or lacking. Does it fully address the question?
- Show how you edit and build upon the AI’s ideas. Modify, add to, or omit certain passages to improve the content.
- Attribute any text you integrate. Cite the AI tool used for any final passages adapted from its raw output.
This models responsible practices for students. They will see firsthand how to thoughtfully leverage AI as a resource while maintaining academic integrity and original work.
Address the Risks
Have candid conversations about potential downsides of relying too heavily on AI. Issues include:
- Loss of originality and personal voice. Overuse of AI can result in work that lacks individuality or uniqueness. Students miss a chance to develop an authentic authorial style.
- Missed opportunities to strengthen skills. Allowing AI to do too much of the work deprives students of chances to improve research, critical thinking, writing, rhetoric, and other abilities.
- Plagiarism and copyright/fair use confusion. Students may neglect to cite AI sources properly or exceed fair use limits on quoted material.
- Overreliance on algorithmic biases and errors. AI can reflect embedded societal biases and make factual mistakes that students must catch through careful scrutiny.
- Deskilling. Extensive dependence on AI risks degrading students’ own knowledge and competencies over time.
Sparing use with human oversight helps mitigate these risks. Students should treat AI as an assistive tool, not as a replacement for their own learning.
Encourage Citation
If students do end up using verbatim AI output in assignments, require that they properly cite and attribute it, just as with any other source. Familiarize them with emerging standards around AI citation, and consider allowing or requiring a disclaimer like:
“This assignment was completed with assistance from the AI tool ChatGPT.”
Footnotes, in-text citations, or a references list crediting the AI used are other options. The key is transparency: making it obvious which parts incorporate outside help. Students should not try to pass off AI text as their own original writing.
Check for Plagiarism
Continue to screen assignments through plagiarism checkers as you normally would. While advanced AI can produce more original-sounding output, much of it still contains copied or paraphrased material without attribution. Enforce consequences for plagiarism per your policies.
Explain to students that plagiarism checks are not just for catching copying of human sources; they also detect improper borrowing from AI. Students must properly attribute and cite AI just as they would any textbook, website, or journal article.
You may need to vary your process to catch AI plagiarism, like spot-checking for style inconsistencies and factual errors indicative of unedited AI content. Stay vigilant.
Weigh Your Assessment Criteria
For assignments allowing AI assistance, ensure your grading rubrics and criteria align. Place more emphasis on higher-order skills like critical analysis, original ideas, evidence synthesis, design thinking, etc. Focus less on rote facts, basic comprehension, and formulaic writing.
Look for signs of individual reasoning and authorial voice over fluent writing or thorough content alone, which AI can provide with minimal human effort. Does the submission demonstrate the learning you aim to cultivate? Weight the grading factors accordingly.
Embrace the Possibilities
While risks exist, AI also presents exciting opportunities to enhance education. Some possibilities include:
- Personalizing instruction and feedback at scale. AI tutoring systems can provide each student with tailored support.
- Allowing students to easily access expert knowledge. AI makes advanced information understandable to broader audiences.
- Fostering deeper discussions and debates. AI-generated content and perspectives can stimulate analysis from new angles.
- Reducing busywork to focus on higher-value skills. Automating routine tasks like basic research and drafting gives students more time to develop critical abilities.
- Expanding creativity and idea generation. AI can help students overcome writer’s block and envision innovative directions.
- Individualizing support for neurodiverse learners. AI can adapt to different learning needs and styles.
With sound policies and guidance, teachers can realize these benefits responsibly. Avoid an outright AI ban; instead, create structures to minimize risks while allowing good-faith usage that enriches learning. Define appropriate roles for AI aligned to pedagogical goals.
Engage Students in Setting Standards
Don’t create AI policies unilaterally. Have an open discussion where students share their perspectives on AI ethics. Get their input on developing fair rules that discourage misuse while enabling beneficial applications.
Student buy-in is essential for upholding any classroom AI guidelines. Co-creating standards helps give students ownership over responsible use. Offer an anonymous suggestions box for more candid feedback on evolving policies.
Train Students on AI Literacy
Don’t assume students are already well-versed in AI best practices. Offer explicit instruction on topics like:
- How AI systems work, their capabilities and limitations
- Recognizing biases, errors, and misinformation in AI output
- Verifying facts and claims made by AI
- Proper attribution and citation of AI sources
- Quoting and paraphrasing standards for AI-generated text
- Safeguarding against overreliance on AI (maintaining human skills)
These lessons equip students to make ethical decisions when using AI technologies.
Remain Flexible and Responsive
This is uncharted territory, so be open to recalibrating your policies as needed. Stay on top of emerging developments in AI capabilities and misuse that may require new classroom rules.
Solicit ongoing student feedback to understand what’s working versus what’s being gamed or abused. Adapt your guidelines to make them as robust as possible against improper use while supporting pedagogical aims.
Partner with Parents
Communicate with parents/guardians to align on AI expectations at home and school. Discourage overuse of AI for homework help that deprives students of learning. Suggest monitoring AI use and having students explain what tasks they are asking it to complete.
If parents are heavy AI users themselves, urge ethical practices to reinforce the lessons students learn in your class. Parent-teacher coordination bolsters student integrity.
Involve School Leaders
Work with administrators and technology staff to coordinate classroom-level AI policies with school-wide standards. Having consistent guidelines across subjects and grades prevents confusion and strengthens the culture of academic integrity.
School IT departments can assist in monitoring student AI activity on school networks and devices. Discourage use of consumer AI apps that lack transparency and oversight safeguards.
Advocate Ongoing Dialogue
Classroom AI guidelines should be a living conversation, not set-in-stone forever. Maintain an open forum for discussing emerging use cases, risks, and best practices. Make space for student perspectives and ideas.
AI is progressing rapidly, and no rigid policy can anticipate every scenario. With good faith on all sides, an adaptive framework focused on learning can enable ethical integration of AI’s opportunities.
The rise of AI need not be a threat. As educators, we have an obligation to equip students to use these powerful tools wisely. With care and foresight, we can inspire the next generation to unlock their fullest potential.
